(from Sandy's liner notes, March 2001) -
I've always dreamed of making an album since I began to write songs way back in college. I'd played both as a solo act and with bands in and around Chicago since 1980, and only recently got back into performing again after a long hiatus. I began to sing at music parties and even guest-hosted an open mike.
But something was missing. Everywhere I went, I was asked, "Where can we hear you next? Do you have any CDs?" (I'd reply, "yes-hundreds, by many different artists.") I then realized that nearly everybody who played out more than sporadically had made his or her own CD. The technology had become so affordable that it was foolish not to avail myself of it, and I wasn't getting any younger. I wanted people to be able to hear some of my best songs at their leisure and not just at time.
Which is why I turned to Ralph [Covert]. I found out he was producing a short record for a classmate of mine in an Old Town School of Folk Music songwriting course Ralph was teaching, so I sought him out about producing my songs. I was familiar with his own work, both solo and with the Bad Examples; but I was blown away by the quality of the work he did for others, some of whom were neophytes themselves. In spring 2000 we began the process of selecting twelve (out of dozens) of my songs, finding musicians, arranging, recording and mixing.
So this CD is the result of a year's work - and of decades of performing and songwriting. I hope you have as much fun listening to it as I had making it!
